ASRI Academy of Fine Arts Indonesia
In the long historical journey, Faculty of Fine Arts Institut Seni Indonesia Yogyakarta is an institution of higher education in the field of Indonesian art almost as old as the age of the Republic of Indonesia.
Before transformed into the Faculty of Fine Arts ISI Yogyakarta as it is now known, this institution was originally named ASRI or Indonesian Academy of Fine Arts.

ASRI was standing on the basis of Decree of the Minister of PP and K no. 32/Kebud., Dated December 15, 1949.
It was inaugurated on 15 January 1950 by ministers of PP and K at the time, namely S. Ward Kepatihan Mangunsarkoro in Yogyakarta, with its first director RJ lifted. Katamsi.
Arts education ASRI held at the time that Art of Painting, Sculpture, Art Carpentry, and “Redig” stands Reklame, Decoration, Graphic Illustration, followed by the Department of Drawing Teachers.

At the beginning of the ASRI in an emergency department, does not have an integrated campus.
Education held in many places. Energy Center Building Painter Indonesia (PTPI) Yogyakarta as the central office, where lectures, and studio Part I / II. SMA / B Kota Baru and homes RJ.
Katamsi in Gondolayu to the studio Part IV and V. Former building in Ambachschool Kunst Ngabean and Bintaran to the studio Part III. New in 1957, ASRI get pre-Fabricated building assistance from the United States that looks similar to many high school buildings in Indonesia, which is known as a legendary college Gampingan it.

With facilities and infrastructure conditions are very limited, also experience the academy organization that does not exist, and human resources are very less, in fact ASRI can walk.
But more than that, actually professors who teach a high quality. RJ. Graduate Katamsi own Beeldende Academie voor Kunsten, Den Haag, teaching art history, reproductive science, perspective, and opmeten.
Djajengasmoro taught painting and stilleven. Kusnadi is also a painter, taught composition.
Mardio teaching method and drawing on the blackboard. Ardan teaching materials and knowledge to draw Warindyo carvings. Doctors plastic Radiopoetro teaching anatomy, Widjokongko in photography, typography, and descriptive geometry, while teaching history Padmopoespito culture.

The first generation of students totaling 160 people, appears a strong potentials in their respective fields of art, so that after five or six years later was recruited to be teachers.
They are Widayat, Hendrodjasmoro, Saptoto, HM. Bakir, Alibasyah Abas, Abdul Kadir, Edhi Sunarso, and Soetopo.
In the Indonesian art world they also became known as artists that are reliable.

State of emergency in the establishment of this art college was not unprepared result in applied strict educational system by applying the norms of academic and science-based methods of knowledge (wetenschapelijk).
The issue also resulted in less mature manufacturing curriculum, giving names of courses, as well as academic regulations are not yet well ordered.

With wisdom and contextual awareness on existing conditions, then instead of applying ASRI ngajaran the “system of global projects”, ie a system that gives courage and freedom to the students.
With that system, in the process of a new six-month study ASRI was able to appear in the exhibition’s Birthday Independence to-5 at the Museum Sonobudoyo Yogyakarta. On that occasion RJ.
Katamsi revealed that this encouragement is the fruit of the “system of global project”, which in practice are not interested in teaching the details of objects (natural or objects) that are encountered, but only put the overall impression that has been peppered with personal concept.
With the “global project system” This should be a lot ASRI brings students to practice on the spot to nature, and it has done with the paint out as to Parangtritis, Kaliurang, Borobudur, and others. However, there is also another tradition that continues to grow from ASRI education system, ie students are not directed at a particular style and color in the work.
In addition, in the teaching of realism and naturalism, students are given a complete basic, logical, and real.

In a further development, without realizing there was a shift in vision ASRI education should educate prospective artists to educate prospective teachers.
This is because the influence of reality in society and life, that living as an artist was still difficult to get life insurance.
Hence the demand that developing ASRI education can also get a diploma equivalence with SGA and B-1, so that they can to teach.
Deviation of this educational vision and then corrected by Decree of the Minister of Primary Education and Culture No. 27/1963, April 5, 1963. In the ASRI and the decree was given full academic status, and separate Part One (who entered junior high school graduates to the field of painting, sculpture, and craft) to High School of Fine Arts, and Part Five (of the teacher image) into the Department of Fine Arts in IKIP.

The next status change occurred on November 4, 1968, which became the High School of Fine Arts Indonesia (STSRI), through the Decree of the Minister of Education and Culture No. 0100/1968.
STSRI with a new name, the name is not removed because ASRI used as a brand name that has familiair with the community. Besides the Java language, meaning beautiful beautiful and fun, so the title has a good image for the college fine arts.

In that status, STSRI “ASRI” as an art of higher education has opened a doctoral or graduate-level management and fix a variety of academic software in the education system. In 1969, spearheaded by Soedarso Sp, MA who was then serving as Acting.
Chairman, replacing the system or an increase in the annual study by the semester system and guided study in Semester Credit Units (SCU).
For universities in Yogyakarta, STSRI “ASRI” turned out to be a pioneer in the use of this system.
Of course, this system is intended to encourage the tradition and ethos of student learning to be more disciplined, because to achieve the required undergraduate degree target weight of scientific achievements as well.
Similarly, the parts area of study at the academy system before increasing steadily developed into six Department, the Art of Painting, Sculpture, Illustration Art / Graphics, Art Craft, Art Reklame / Propaganda, and the Decorative Arts.

From STSRI “ASRI” to the Faculty of Fine Arts, ISI Yogyakarta
Travel process of higher education institutions of this art is the most recent enrollment STSRI “ASRI” with AMI and ASTI forming Institut Seni Indonesia Yogyakarta, which was formally established by Presidential Decree, no. 39/1984, dated May 30, 1984 and the inauguration of the establishment by the Education Minister on July 23, 1984.
In this section, the Faculty of Art ISI Yogyakarta, is still a long way from the higher education system refinements of art, which maintain the dialogue between tradition and modernity values.
Indonesia and the accompanying development of the modern era, FSR ISI Yogyakarta developed education system in accordance with the concepts of modern education in the framework of the vision ISI Yogyakarta and the norms of the Ministry of National Education.
In the process of change to the Faculty of Fine Arts campus is still occupying this old place in Gampingan, but after the year 1995 the campus moved to the street FSR Parangtritis, Sewon, Bantul joined the integrated ISI Yogyakarta campus.
